10 Epic Places to Visit in Fuerteventura: The Ultimate Canary Islands Itinerary

When most people think of a European vacation, they picture old historical cities and quaint cafes. But Fuerteventura offers something completely different. Located just 100 kilometers off the coast of Africa, this stunning Spanish island looks like a wild, untamed cross between the Sahara Desert, the Maldives, and the planet Mars.  

I recently returned from an epic road trip exploring everything from freezing Atlantic waves to ancient volcanoes, and this island completely blew my mind. Whether you are hunting for untouched nature, dramatic landscapes, or world-class beaches, here are the top 10 best places to visit in Fuerteventura based on my adventure!  

Quick Overview: Fuerteventura Top Spots

1. Corralejo National Park

Let’s start in the northern part of the island at Corralejo National Park, a place that is absolutely unreal.  

• The Dunes: The sand here literally blows in from the Sahara desert, creating massive, rolling white dunes right next to the ocean.  

  
  

• Best Beaches: If you want to relax, check out Grandes Playas and Playa del Pozo, the latter of which has a peaceful, nudist-friendly vibe that is very common in the Canaries.  

  
  

• Surfing: For perfectly soft white sand, Playa del Moro is the ultimate spot to watch hardcore surfers tackle intense waves. Its one of the favorites amongst kite surgers  

  
  

2. Mirador Guise y Ayose

After exploring the beaches, head inland up the beautifully paved mountain roads. You definitely need to stop at Mirador Guise y Ayose, an incredible viewpoint positioned perfectly on a mountain ridge. Standing guard are two massive, 15-foot-tall bronze statues of Fuerteventura's ancient kings, Guise and Ayose. The sheer size of these statues is crazy, and the panoramic views of the volcanic valleys below are spectacular.  

3. Betancuria

From the viewpoint, drive down into a lush, hidden valley oasis to find Betancuria.  

• Rich History: Founded in 1404, it is one of the oldest cities on the island. It served as the capital for over 400 years.  

  
  

• Pirate Hideaway: The founders purposely built this capital deep inside a valley so ocean pirates couldn't see it from the coast.  

  
  

• What to Do: Wander the cobblestone streets, marvel at two-story-high cacti, grab local Canarian tapas, and explore the historic Santa María church.  

  
  

4. Local Aloe Vera Farms

While you are in the central region, visiting a local Aloe Vera farm is a must. Thanks to its mineral-rich volcanic soil, Fuerteventura is basically the Aloe Vera capital of Europe. Watching locals extract pure gel straight from massive, spiked leaves is super fascinating and makes for a uniquely Fuerteventuran experience.  

5. Playa del Águila (Stairway Beach)

Getting to this next coastal spot is an absolute adrenaline rush. To reach Playa del Águila (also known as Stairway Beach), you have to navigate a sheer, off-road dirt track right on the edge of high cliffs.  

• The Reward: A breathtakingly dramatic stone staircase carved straight into the cliffside leading down to the roaring ocean.  

  
  

• Crucial Pro-Tip: You must check the tide schedules before visiting. If you arrive during high tide, there is absolutely zero sand to stand on, as massive waves crash straight into the bottom of the stairs.  

  
  

6. Centro de Interpretación de los Molinos

To step back in time, visit the windmill museum in the picturesque village of Tiscamanita. Because Fuerteventura is so incredibly windy, locals had to learn how to harness that power centuries ago to grind their grain. It is a super peaceful stop, costs only about 4 Euros to enter, and features some of the warmest local hosts you'll meet on the island.  

7. Montaña de Tindaya & Mirador de Vallebrón

As golden hour approaches, make your way to Montaña de Tindaya. This pyramid-like peak isn't just any mountain; it was deeply sacred to the island's ancient aboriginal people, the Majos, who believed it held magical properties. Standing at the foothills, you can genuinely feel a powerful energy.  

Right nearby is the Mirador de Vallebrón. A steep drive rewards you with a stone terrace offering unmatched panoramic views of the northwest coast, a massive U-shaped valley, and Tindaya glowing in the distance.  

8. Mirador Astronómico de Sicasumbre

Start your next morning by driving deep into the south of the island to the Mirador Astronómico de Sicasumbre. Fuerteventura was declared an official Starlight Reserve in 2015 due to its zero light pollution, making it a world-class destination for stargazing. But even in the daytime, the 360-degree views of deep, infinite terracotta mountains make you feel like you are exploring the surface of Mars.  

9. Cofete: The Edge of World

Nothing prepares you for Cofete. Reaching this remote location requires a grueling 20-kilometer drive on an unpaved, deeply rutted dirt track over a jagged mountain pass.  

• The Views: Known as the "End of the World," this area features towering 800-meter-high green and black mountains that crash completely vertically into a wild, roaring ocean.  

  
  

• The Vibe: There are no buildings, just raw nature. The mist is thick, and the currents are so aggressive that swimming is strictly prohibited. The sheer remoteness here strips away your ego—it is Earth in its most powerful, untouchable form.  

  
  

10. Playa de Sotavento

To wrap up your trip, transition from the island's most rugged terrain to the absolute crown jewel of the Canaries: Playa de Sotavento. This paradise stretches for 9 kilometers. Because of the shifting tides, a massive, shallow turquoise lagoon forms right in the middle of the beach, acting like a giant mirror reflecting the sky. The wind conditions here are so perfect that it regularly hosts the World Kiteboarding Championships. Walking barefoot in the crystal-clear water while watching colorful kites fly overhead is the perfect way to end an epic road trip.
